A Psychologist is someone who is trained to support individuals to learn to cope more effectively with life issues and mental health difficulties. Psychologists assess how individuals think, feel and act and use this information to identify areas of functioning that require support. Psychologists work with their clients to identify and reach goals to support their emotional and mental well being.

The first session is an opportunity for the Psychologist to gather information and understand what the issues are you would like support with. It is also an opportunity for you to begin to get to know your Psychologist. It is important to establish a strong working therapeutic relationship based on trust in order for positive progress to be made moving forward. During the first session the Psychologist will ask a number of questions and may take notes which will help them formulate the best plan of action for future therapy sessions.

There are a number of factors to be taken into account when considering how many sessions an individual may need. Factors such as the issues being addressed, the individual’s willingness and ability to engage in the therapeutic relationship and activities, the individual’s ability to embed strategies into their day to day life and attendance at sessions can all impact on progress. Some clients find they only require 6 sessions in order to make positive changes in their lives, others find they require ongoing support for many years in order to maintain progress and feel balanced and supported.

Session are approximately 50 minutes in duration.

The frequency of sessions will usually be decided during the first session. Factors such as availability of appointments, financial constraints/commitments and the level of intervention required will be taken into account when deciding on frequency. In general clients usually opt for weekly or fortnightly appointments. In some instances clients may decide that once an initial block of therapy is completed (6-10 session) they would like to engage in maintenance sessions of once per month.

We follow the Australian Psychological Society (APS) Code of Ethics, the APS Guidelines and the Australian Privacy Principles in relation to information disclosed during sessions. In general all sessions are confidential unless information shared during the session leads the Psychologist to be concerned that an individual may be at risk of hurting themselves or someone else.

The Australian Psychological Society recommends an hourly rate of $251 for therapy services, however in an attempt to ensure access to services is more feasible, Cherish Psychology charges a reduced rate. Please see our “Service Costs” page for further information.

Clients who are accessing services under a Mental Health Care Plan will receive a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. We are able to process your rebate for you once all fees session fees have been paid for. Individuals with Private Health Insurance may be able to claim back a percentage of their session fees. Please consult your individual insurer to assess your eligibility for rebates. Please note, you cannot use your private health insurance ancillary cover in conjunction with Medicare rebates for psychology services.

Consistent attendance at sessions is important as it allows momentum to build which supports individuals to make and maintain progress. Large gaps between sessions can have a negative impact on the flow of therapy as time needs to be taken to re-cap previous sessions and discuss issues that may have arisen in the interim.

If you are unable to attend an appointment, it is essential that you contact us as soon as possible to advise you will not be attending. Efforts will be made to reschedule your appointment in a timely manner; however, a cancellation fee for the missed or cancelled appointment will apply. As we are unable to fill cancelled appointments at short notice the full session fee will be added to the cost of your next appointment unless we receive 24 hours notice of your intention to cancel or change an appointment. This cancellation fee will be paid prior to your next session commencing.

Cherish Psychology is not a crisis service. If you find yourself or a loved one feeling unsafe outside of your appointment time, please contact 000 or make your way to your closest hospital where a mental health assessment can be completed.

Can I receive a rebate?
